Steel and wood
28" X 83"
I liked the cross shape in the door represented so I used that as the basis for the design. There is a beauty and danger in the whole piece; welcoming and protecting at the same time.
Over 200 feet of steel were used in its creation. All the metal shapes were hand cut and forged to fit together, the pipe in the center was formed using over 1,000 ball peen hammer blows.
The doors-inside-the-door represent different entrances to heaven. Grasping the cross (or its reality) opens the smaller doors at top. The main cross represents the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. The hole in the middle serves a two-fold purpose; it is both an opening to see who is at the door and portal through which your faith can be seen and tested. The crown of thorns represents the suffering people may endure in order to get their faith through the porthole.
When all the doors are open, the main cross, viewed from the back, appears like a large star similar to the compass rose pointing the cardinal directions on our journey to faith, Heaven or wherever we are headed.
