¡SI, SE PUEDE! (Yes, We Can!)

Mixed media
32" X 78"

Emily Hensley

I was initially inspired for this project by the Rolling Stones’ song, “Paint it Black”. “I see a red door and I want it painted black...” I also drew ideas from La Casa’s community service, the United Farm Workers, the Virgen de Guadelupe, and Cesar Chavez.

"Once social change begins, it cannot be reversed. You cannot un-educate the person who has learned to read. You cannot humiliate the person who feels pride. You cannot oppress the people who are not afraid anymore. We have seen the future, and the future is ours."
- Cesar Chavez

The slogan for change "Yes, we can!" currently utilized by Barak Obama, originated with Chavez and the United Farm Workers in 1972.

Finally, I represented the Virgin of Guadalupe with an ancient Aztec crown as the patroness of the Americas as well as a symbol of the woman of the apocalypse in Revelation 12:1-2.

"And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered."
